Phase 1 Noise vs. Core Result

RPM is not a very good measure as it doesn’t necessarily translate to noise level very well. Also some fans have different pressure capabilities so again their air output through the radiator is different than other fans at like RPM.  So with that I had to do some noise measurements at those tested RPM levels and came up with this noise level vs. core temperature relationship.

The XSPC kit performs well and on the heels of the H220 for the lead and a fair margin ahead of the Larkooler kit.

As always, I prefer to do my noise testing with a video camera since I don’t have a means to log noise level and I also like to let people listen for themselves.  Sound level alone doesn’t mean everything and the sound type and tone can often be more critical. Not quite sure what the electronic noise is in the background, I think that was just the camera acting up but the audio in between should give you some sense of noise.  Dialing the fans clear down to 0% or 470RPM you can just barely hear the pump when I bring the camera up to it, but it’s really pretty darn good for being solid mounted in the bay.

The fans were ok up to about 1300RPM, but the 1650 level seemed to be a higher noise output.  I also noticed a little low speed noise in the fans that is hard to describe other than not being very smooth. The Gentle Typhoons test at the end performed better at full speed and they were turning almost 200RPM faster.  In general I was pretty happy with the pump noise, but the fans didn’t do as well as I had hoped.

The XSPC and H220 kits are pretty close, but a fair margin ahead of the Larkooler kit.

Next up I will show you the thermal benefits of changing the fans out.

    Hi Martin,

    In your RS360 review, the out/in air delta was about 8.8 degrees for 1400rpm fans at about 200w of heat. In this review, given the smaller RS 240 but similar fan speeds and heat loads, I was expecting to see out/in air deltas of maybe 13 degrees? Otherwise, the air wouldn’t be able to carry away the same amount of thermal energy.

    However from your tests, the RS240 seems to be able to dissipate the heat of your overclocked 3930K with only an out/in delta of 3 degrees. This befuddles me, and I can’t understand how the system achieves thermal equilibrium. How is all the rest of the heat lost?

    What are your thoughts on this? Could there be some difference in your air temp measurements as compared to the measurements done in your radiator tester. Maybe the rest of the case air is mixing with the air out?

      Disregard the air out in these kits. It is located such that it gets cold intake air from the front case fan and really not useful or accurate. The air out in my rad bench is controlled and accurate but it is very hard to measure air out without some sort of rad test bench.

      That’s the downside of case testing. It better represents thermals and noise but harder to measure something like air out when you have air coming in all over the place. In the kit testing air in and core temps are really the only thing I can control very well.
